Study Abroad
All University-sponsored study abroad programs have been suspended.
Due to the serious and global public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to mitigate risks to our students' well-being, the University has suspended all outbound global education programs for the summer of 2020 until further notice.
If you are an F-1 visa holder and cannot return to your home country, please contact the Office of Residential Life at residentiallife@nd.edu.
If you have not traveled to Italy or any other Level 3 country in the past two weeks, you are not required to self-quarantine.
Study Abroad Academic Continuity
The University is committed to the academic continuity of all study abroad students and has offered the following guidance to all spring 2020 returnees:
For all locations where the host institution is offering remote learning, students should continue their studies and ultimately complete the term by following the instructions provided by the host institution and their professors.
The Notre Dame Gateways and Centers will continue to offer their courses remotely and have already sent communications to the students for their enrolled courses.
Understanding that some courses are very difficult to complete remotely via distance learning, the last day to drop a course was moved to April 3.
The University has determined that for the spring 2020 semester only, any “W” (withdrawal) grades reflected on the transcripts that students receive from foreign institutions will not be carried over onto the students’ Notre Dame transcript. Any withdrawal from a course at a foreign institution will be treated as a “drop” by Notre Dame; as such, the course will not appear on the Notre Dame transcript.
For students whose course load is not yet at 12 credit hours due to the unavailability of remote learning options at host institutions, Arts and Letters has offered Abbreviated Courses through online learning and students can add half-semester courses. The deadline to add these courses was April 1.
The Academic Council approved temporary adjustments to the academic code for leave of absence and grading for the spring 2020 term as a result of the unusual circumstances arising in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. These adjustments apply to study abroad Spring 2020 students as well.
Under the modified P/NC grading option, grades of A through D may be converted to a P (Pass) grade and the grade of F may be converted to a NC (No Credit) grade. Students will be able to view all standard letter course grades of A through F first and then may file with their academic dean (or dean’s designee) a request to switch any Spring 2020 course grade from A through F to P/NC. However, the timeline and the process will be different from the current guideline as the start and end dates of study abroad programs are different from the University’s academic calendar. NDI will be working with the Registrar’s Office and the advising deans on the process to allow students to switch grades from A through F to P/NC and more details will be provided in the coming weeks.
